William Summay
William Summay is a passionate and warm licensed mental health counselor who has a specialty in LGBTQ+ mental health care, religious trauma, generalist practice, and more. William has four years of experience working in LGBTQ+ mental health care in a group private practice, which included working in areas of navigating non-monogamous relationships, coming out, processing and accessing gender confirming care, and more. William has co-led a year-long survivors of religious trauma group, he has worked with a broad spectrum of diagnostic presentations (e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar, etc.), and has many years of professional and personal experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds which has led to the privileging of cultural humility in his practice. William believes highly in the therapeutic relationship as the site of exploring, processing, and working through the various pain and sufferings of life on a variety of societal levels (e.g., personal, familial, political, etc.). For this reason, William practices from the position of relational psychotherapy (attachment theory, psychodynamic theory/practice), liberation psychology (exploring the societal and political effects on mental health), somatic (the body as the site of mental processing and healing), as well as incorporating other approaches as needed (mindfulness, CBT tools, etc.). The core tenets that guide William in these approaches are curiosity, generosity, creativity, and exploration. In his free time, William enjoys writing, reading, cycling, and cooking.
