Hello, my name is Sheila Cooley-Parker and I am very excited to meet you! Together, we'll get to know each other, find out your therapy goals, and take the steps we need to reach these goals.
My ideal client is someone who knows they need help but is unsure as to how to go about getting help and then once they get help, how to maintain it. Their issues can be complex and intermingled, but when talked about with a therapist, they become very simple and straightforward. Issues are usually dealing with relationships either in the workplace or home environment. Goals are usually simple to start and maintain which gives the client a feeling of direction and input. They want their life to be simplified and maintainable. They want to feel a sense of accomplishment.
I think of myself as a guide and support system person. I may work as a “gatekeeper” to assist the client from feeling overwhelmed. My approach may be behavioral in setting up goals and to set the goals as measurable and obtainable. I may be client-centered in assisting the client on their path of “enlightenment,” making sure they feel supported and reassured. In sessions, we would work towards measurable goals and gain understanding and “enlightenment.”
I have worked in the field of psychology for 40 years and have had my PhD for 36 years. I have worked in inpatient, outpatient, incarceration settings, nursing homes, educational settings, and in addiction/substance abuse programs. I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric persons. I have an attitude that nothing is insurmountable and anything can be accomplished if you want it badly enough. As far as special—I think everyone is special and deserves a chance to achieve their dreams/goals!
