Hello. I’m Karen and I'm so glad you're here. I graduated from the University of Florida’s Counselor Education Program in 1994, and have been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for nearly 25 years. My background is in treating anxiety, depression, grief, loss, and medical trauma. These issues are often attached to personal loss/trauma, life transitions, or current and past relationship struggles.
My counseling style is empathic, interactive, and solution-focused. You and your strengths are the focus of treatment. Solution-focused and cognitive-behavioral therapies have an impact across many situations because they offer guidance and tools for real life. Because of this, I use these approaches, combined with mindfulness, often. Focusing on how thoughts impact emotions and implementing steps towards change means that counseling does not generally need to be long-term. Effective therapy sends people out with tools and strategies to use immediately and into the future.
Therapy is not about becoming “less anxious, not lonely, or not depressed.” It’s about becoming happy, content, engaged, and connected. Think of counseling as a road map or a guide. It’s a tool to plan the best route towards your goals. Along the way, you get to decide the pace, detours, and destination…but there is lots of help along the way with direction, re-fueling, and taking in the scenery. If you have not utilized counseling in the past, please know that it is simply a safe place to tell your story and make the changes that you choose. If you have taken part in counseling before, welcome back. Adjustments, adaptations, and growth are lifelong pursuits.
I am already looking forward to meeting you and am excited about the road ahead.
