Willie Whited
I am a Vietnam-era veteran who worked as a Medical Specialist, protecting our Nation's heroes suffering from Medical and Mental Health problems. After the Service, I embarked on a 31-year history of working with individuals in our communities with Serious Mental Health problems and Psychoactive Substance addictions. During my occupational transitions, I was employed at Grady Memorial Hospital (12 years), Fulton County MH (12 years), and the Dekalb Community Service Board for 23 years. I was also an Adjunct Instructor at Ashford University and A Mental Health Clinician at Laurel Heights Hospital. I have achieved a master’s in social work, a Master's in Guidance and Counseling, and All but a Dissertation towards a Ph.D. in Academic Psychology. As a Mental Health Associate at Grady Hospital, I wrote the format for the Community meetings, led the Mileu program for several years, and served as a member in Schizophrenic research. In Fulton County, I created and led the Dual Diagnosis program during its(the diagnosis) national infancy in 1989. Fulton County also awarded me an Exceptional Service Award for my efforts to save the lives of others. I carried on the history of work with individuals with co-occurring disorders to Dekalb County, coordinated the group process clinical efforts, and received an NAACP nomination for community service after engaging the community to learn about co-occurring disorders in our communities. In 2016, I was privileged to be allowed to attend the David Satcher Leadership Program at Morehouse School of Medicine. I have received several verbal and written recommendations of the merit of my work with individuals with psychiatric problems. Although the potential to contribute to the health and safety of any individual's life is priceless, I often remember an individual who worked hard on recovery and was recognized by the Governor's wife at that time for outstanding achievement. The individual's painting was housed in a State Government building. My theoretical delivery is individually focused, and interventions are eclectic to ensure that the agent of change uniquely fits that individual seeking positive change.
