Melinda Otey
I graduated from Radford University in Radford, VA in 2007 with a Master's in Social Work. I obtained my LCSW in 2013. I am a mother of two boys who love to stay busy with sports! I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I find that therapy can be a little intimidating for some but having a safe and confidential space to "land" has so much value in our lives I believe. We often find ourselves worrying about things to come, regrets we live with, and goals we hope to achieve whether that be in our personal life, family, life, and work life. I use a variety of approaches but being person-centered and strengths-based are often in my core. Fifteen years of my career were spent working at Family Preservation Services in Roanoke Va and the surrounding areas/counties doing community-based work in various roles. I worked with adults with severe mental health diagnosis and assisted those individuals in the development of their daily living skills and accessing needed services. I worked in Therapeutic Day Treatment Services that was based in the public school setting with children with mental health diagnoses and needs causing disruption of their school day and overall functioning. My time spent working in intensive in-home counseling was where I provided up to 10 hours of counseling with the identified client (child) in their natural setting and within the "family" system in which they lived. As I ended my time there, I was acting as the Roanoke Regional Director. It was during that time, I learned many skills that I find applicable when navigating the workplace and management of self and people. I also did out-patient counseling during my time there and licensure supervision for those candidates seeking to become licensed in VA. Since October of 2019, I have been working as an Employee Assistance Consultant. In this role I have worked with people addressing various needs in their personal and work lives. In March of 2020, we moved into doing virtual sessions when COVID began. At that time I did a lot of work in grief/loss, fear, anxiety, depression, domestic violence, addiction, parenting concerns, issues with coworkers, career change, and many other areas of focus. I look forward to talking with you further and see if we are a good match and that you feel my clinical experience and approaches may be of benefit to you.
