Joann Weston
For over 21-years I worked as a certified dental assistant caring for patients who suffered with physical pain and low self-esteem as a result of dental problems. In 2005, I felt an overwhelming desire to serve individuals suffering with deeper, more enduring emotional pain. Prior to returning to college in 2007, I worked for two years with individuals who were facing unplanned pregnancies. Devoting my time to community outreach and crisis intervention resulted in the development of a successful community crisis center that served five counties, still in operation today. In 2011, I earned my bachelor’s degree in social work. I spent my undergraduate internship working in acute Adult and Senior Behavior Health Unites caring for individuals who suffered with severe, persistent mental health illnesses. In 2013, I graduated with my master’s degree in professional counseling. I earned my professional counseling license after providing over three thousand hours of care in private practice and outpatient substance abuse treatment clinics. From 2013 to 2015, the population I served in private practice ranged from age 5 to 85-years-old, (male and female). The treatment services I provided addressed various forms of stress, anxiety, depression, Bi-Polar disorders, ADHD, OCD, grief and loss, family dysfunction, marriage counseling, pain management, anger management, phase of life changes, and personality disorders. Switching gears in 2015, I worked as contract staff for the Missouri Department of Corrections and provided group therapy focused on intensive sex offender treatment, while maintaining my own private practice. From 2006 to 2015, I also volunteered my time mentoring young girls and women. Other volunteer work included facilitating small group studies focused on self-esteem, shame, guilt, and forgiveness issues from a Christian perspective. In 2017, I returned to community treatment and private practice setting. Six years later, (and having survived the pandemic), I made the decision to work virtually from my home full time. I developed my online private practice, Better for Life, LLC, and I also provide contract counseling services with other online platforms. Continuing my education through the years, I received specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Personality Disorders, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). My primary treatment modality is CBT, however, treatment is always individualized based on client need and best practices. CBT is based on the principle that thoughts influence feelings, feelings influence actions, and actions influence our results – or life circumstances. I believe helping people recognize and challenge faulty thoughts and beliefs empowers them to manage their feelings and leads to healthier choices for a healthier quality of life.
