Jennifer Packer
I graduated in the top ten of my high school graduating class. During my senior year, I applied and was accepted into Tuskegee University with a presidential scholarship. I worked very hard throughout my college years and graduated with honors. I completed the Tuskegee University social work program and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work in 2006. After graduation, I went to work for the state of Alabama as Social Worker in Jefferson County. After a year of service and becoming licensed at the bachelor level, I decided to attend Alabama A&M University for a Master’s Degree in Social Work. While studying at Alabama A&M University, I continued to intern at Jefferson County DHR. In 2008, I graduated with an MSW degree with a concentration in Family and Child Welfare. I returned to Jefferson County as a Senior Social Worker. While working for Jefferson County DHR, I became licensed at the master’s level. I soon left Jefferson County DHR feeling overworked and unappreciated. It was at this point I contemplated leaving social work altogether. I took a year off and the time away gave me the opportunity to remember what I loved about social work. I returned to the social work field, licensing foster homes. I did this for about 4 years. It was during this time, I worked toward getting licensed at the clinical level. Once I became licensed at the clinical level in the state of Alabama, I went to work with Psych-On-Site working in geriatrics. For all of my social work career, I had worked with children and families, so it was a big change. It took some adjusting but working with the elderly and disabled has been a wonderful experience.
