About the Course

This course covers training caregivers in the application of behavioral principles to guiding a person - in this case, children ages 2-12 - from problematic to prosocial behaviors that will support healthy development. This information and skill set can be used by a wide variety of practitioners, including health and wellness coaches, licensed mental health clinicians and other health care clinicians. The course also offers a selection of learning tools such as expert discussion and explanation, role plays, and knowledge checks. The course also includes supplementary tools like printable resources for both caregivers and practitioners.

Steve Mazza, PhD
Steve Mazza, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology within the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). He is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Clinical Director of the ABC Early Childhood Program at ColumbiaDoctors. Dr. Mazza graduated Magna Cum Laude from Skidmore College with a B.S. in elementary education. He received his M.A. in developmental psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University, and received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Hofstra University. Dr. Mazza completed his predoctoral clinical internship at the NYU Child Study Center and Bellevue Hospital Center. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CUCARD), where he specialized in applying Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to treat anxiety disorders in children, adolescents, and young adults. As a faculty member at CUMC, Dr. Mazza developed the ABC Early Childhood Program, which provides evidence-based treatments to children ages 2-8 with emotional and behavioral difficulties. He is a certified Within-Agency Trainer for Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), a gold-standard treatment for disruptive behavior during childhood. Dr. Mazza’s research has focused on the creation and implementation of the Brave START program, a PCIT-informed treatment protocol for children who exhibit both anxiety and oppositionality. Dr. Mazza has been featured on SiriusXM “Doctor Radio,” HealthLine, InsideHook, and PsychHub, and is a public speaker who presents at professional conferences, schools, and summer camps. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association, the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, PCIT International, and the Association of Contextual Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Mazza is the founder and executive director of Play It Forward, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps songwriters raise money for charities using their original music (www.playitforward.com).

Paul Deger, MA, LPC, PT
Paul has learned from his over 35 years of experience in health care that, with patient and compassionate support, we are far more capable of responding to challenges and growth than we tend to believe. We can all access a deep well of peace, wisdom and courage within. Paul began his health career as a Physical Therapist, specializing in neurological rehabilitation. Paul then shifted focus from physical to psychological health, specializing in mindfulness-based interventions. Recognizing the importance of a holistic approach, Paul also did graduate studies in pastoral care. He has worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor in hospital-based, private practice and home-based settings. Paul has taught mindfulness meditation, stress management and health behavior change nationally as well as an invited speaker at professional conferences. Paul is known for creating and delivering insightful and engaging mental well-being learning experiences with NPS scores over 90 and mental well-being products that drive measurable improvements in mental well-being. He is committed to the integration of clinical and creative design towards making engageable and effective education that moves us out of stigma and into mental wellbeing as an attainable right for all! When not working, Paul enjoys rock climbing and vintage car shows with his son.
