About Ron Winchel, MD

Ronald (Ron) Winchel, MD, is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

His currently divides his time between private practice of psychopharmacology – with a special focus on mood and anxiety disorders – and psychopharmacology education at New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI).

Dr. Winchel’s undergraduate education was at Columbia College of Columbia University. After graduation from Tufts University School of Medicine, he initially trained in Internal Medicine at the Boston VA Medical Center. After obtaining broad certification in Internal Medicine, he continued his training psychiatry at NYSPI/New York Presbyterian Medical Center. Upon completion of residency training Dr. Winchel was a research scientist at NYSPI, where he worked in biometrics and then, principally, in the study of altered neurotransmitter function across a variety of impulsive and obsessional disorders, including suicidality, self-injury and trichotillomania.

After a decade as a research scientist, Dr. Winchel devoted his time to clinical practice of psychopharmacology and teaching psychopharmacology to psychiatric residents. He has been a member of the Scientific Program of the American Psychiatric Association for the last 5 years.
